President Obama's Faith Based Initiative & Global Warming

President Barack Obama is renaming former President George Bush’s religion office from the White House Office on Faith-Based and Community Initiatives to the Council for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. President Obama is signing an executive order and announcing the new 25 member council today and 26 year old Joshua DuBois, left, to head the initiative. The White House office will be supplemented by offices in 11 federal agencies.

The late Robert J. Knox was the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) liaison to the White House Office on Faith-Based and Community Initiatives. As Associate Director of EPA's Office of Environmental Justice, Mr. Knox brought unique skills and a long career to bear in combining these two issue areas. The religious community became more involved in the global warming issue in the past few years and we see many excellent opportunities for the religious community and the environmental community to work together to mitigate this threat to the earth. The Evangelical Ecologist is a good source of information on how religion and environment intersect. AAEA has also established the Robert J. Knox Institute to address the intersection of religion and environmental justice. (WFJ/2/5/09)
