Senator John McCain (R-AZ) is amending the McCain/Lieberman Climate Stewardship Act to include nuclear power subsidies to increase its appeal among senators not necessarily inclined to support a carbon dioxide reduction bill. This is a great idea. AAEA supported the bill before, supports Senator McCain's changes and supports nuclear power as one solution to climate change. What do you think?
AAEA, an environmental organization founded in 1985, is dedicated to protecting the environment, enhancing human, animal and plant ecologies, promoting the efficient use of natural resources and increasing African American participation in the environmental movement. We resolve environmental problems through the application of practical environmental solutions. AAEA is an outreach arm of the Center for Environment, Commerce & Energy.

McCain's Nuclear Power Climate Change Fix

I like the nuclear incentives in an otherwise horrible energy bill. I think nuke power is great for reducing point source pollution, but what do we do about the waste??
I know the utilities plan to store it on or under Yucca Mountain in Nevada, but did you know that's Shoshone land? Talk about environmental racism... I hear there's a lawsuit to stop plans for storing it there --- something about treaty rights being violated.
Anyway, I think we need to solve the waste problem before we see nuke power as a solution to environmental pollution.
